Children are born with innate skills to learn to count. Research has demonstrated that children can identify if an addition or subtraction is right or not before learning to count. This leads us to believe that they intuitively do some mathematical processes. However, children can do this only if their environment encourages them.

The way each child learns is not the same, so people taking care of them must provide the right stimuli. This accompaniment must give children a safe environment full of respect and motivation.

One of the easiest ways’ children learn is by interacting with different textures. When they touch, perceive, feel, identify, and classify, they get the information they will need to understand and learn maths.

A benefit of working with materials and textures is that you give children the option to link quantities with numbers. That is essential because it is not the same for children to repeat numbers one by one, then associate the word, the symbol, and the quantity.

The next counting games for kindergarten activity is based on Montessori’s learning method. With it, we seek to help children distinguish between quantities. This way, they will learn complex concepts.

HOW DO WE DO THIS ACTIVITY?

Topic: Counting

Age: 4-6-year-old children

Goal: Kids will enhance counting, and they will learn how to relate quantity and concepts.

Level: Advanced. Children can do this counting games for kindergarten activity by themselves with adult surveillance and following instructions.

MATERIALS

Clay (different colors)
A marker
A sheet of paper

ACTIVITY DEVELOPMENT

Step 1:

Write unit numbers (1-9) on the paper sheet, as indicated in the image.

Step 2:

Draw a worm next to each number. The number of circles you will draw for the worm depends on the number next to it.

Step 3:

Put the clay on each circle.

HOW TO CARRY OUT THIS COUNTING GAME ACTIVITY WITH CHILDREN OF OTHER AGES?

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN UNDER 4 YEARS OLD

You can do this counting games for kindergarten activity with younger children. Suppose they have not yet developed the ability to cut and paste the clay on the circles.

In that case, they can do the exercise with paint, applying paint to the finger, and doing prints over each circle. If they barely know numbers, you should not draw a lot of worms. This process may not be easy for younger children, so you have to patient and do it slowly.

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN OLDER THAN 6

Older children can also do this counting games for kindergarten activity. You can increase the difficulty level if they already know how to relate the number (symbol) with a quantity (worm).

After doing this process, children can put clay over the circles, according to the number next to the worm. In this way, they can relate numbers and quantity and exercise fine motor skills.
