Winter Penguin Craft for Preschool Handcraft Montessori Worksheets (4-6 Year Olds)

Crafts are fun for children and additionally help their concentration, fluency, attention, memory, and have different developmental rates. Encouraging creativity also stimulates the child’s curiosity and senses to give them advantages and parameters to activate their interest and concentration without noticing that they are learning.

In carrying out a simple activity with children, they learn to experiment using different techniques. Of course, it is essential to remember that children need adult supervision when performing all activities. Their safety is of the utmost importance.

In the Montessori learning method, developmental abilities and characteristics are recognized according to age. The child is the one who chooses the activity to be carried out. He/she is entirely free, and we simply need a prepared environment and specific materials.

Let us remember that children are endowed with capacities where they can develop their abilities through free work with didactic materials. The adult’s job in the children’s learning process is to create an environment where everything is safe and without risk. By creating a safe space for children to work and learn, many goals and benefits are achieved, helping them become more autonomous.

The following penguin craft activity is based on the Montessori learning method, which is intended for children to do at home and be able to express their emotions, concentration, and abilities:

THEME: PENGUIN CRAFT ACTIVITY

HOW DO WE DO THIS ACTIVITY?

Topic: Handcrafts

Age: 4-6-year-old children

Goal: Through this penguin craft activity, children will make a penguin handcraft according to the ideas and instructions they are shown, they also will strengthen their fine motor skills.

Difficulty level: Advanced. This penguin craft activity is designed for children to carry out autonomously by following instructions.

MATERIALS

A tray
Scissors
Colored paper (Black, white, yellow or orange, light blue, and dark blue)
Three plastic containers
Small paintbrush
Cotton balls
A marker to outline the child’s hand
Glue

ACTIVITY DEVELOPMENT

Step 1:

Draw your hand on the black paper and cut it out. This will work as the penguin’s body.

Step 2:

Smear glue with a paintbrush and paste the penguin’s body on the light blue paper.

Step 3:

Cut a circle from the white paper, then glue it in the middle of the penguin’s body. This will be the penguin belly.

Step 4:

To make the penguin’s eyes, cut two small circles from the white paper and two smaller circles from the black paper. Glue them together with the little black circles being inside the small white circles. Glue the eyes to the penguin shape.

Step 5:

After cutting a small orange or yellow triangle from the paper, the “beak” is glued below the eyes. Paste the penguin shape on the lower half of the light blue paper.

Step 6:

Finish this activity by gluing some cotton balls above the penguin image. This can be snowflakes falling or clouds. The light blue paper is slightly smaller than the dark blue paper leaving a blue edge around the picture.

HOW DO WE DO THIS PENGUIN CRAFT ACTIVITY WITH CHILDREN OF OTHER AGES?

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN UNDER 4 YEARS OLD

This penguin craft activity can be done with younger children. To lower the difficulty level, it is necessary to change the materials. In this case, you can use a printable for the child to carry out the activity. With a sponge to make paint stamps, the eyes and beak can be done with playdough. In this way, they can perform a motor skill activity appropriate to the development and abilities of younger children.

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN OLDER THAN 6

This preschool activity can be done with older children. To increase the difficulty level, it is unnecessary to change the materials. At this age, children have already developed their fine motor skills to cut out the figures such as the belly, the beak, and the penguin’s eyes. In this way, a kids activity will be carried out according to the children’s development and abilities.
