As we all know, math is an important part of our daily life. With math we develop our critical and logical thinking. We will always use math unconsciously and consciously.

Now, the question is, how do we allow children to have a good relationship with math? If we teach them lo like math early on, this will help them with it at school. If you ask children about numbers, and they start naming them, but it doesn’t mean they know how to count. They are repeating, but they don’t really know the quantity-number ratio.

Piaget, a Swiss psychologist, conducted an interesting experiment with kids. In this experiment he showed two groups with the same numbers of objects and organized the items in the same order. The kids had to choose the group with more objects in it. This kids said both of them were equal. Then Piaget took those groups and changed their order. One of them had their object very close, and the other had their objects spaced. In this case, the kids indicated that the detached objects group had more items in it. That was because this group seemed bigger than the other.

Write the numbers on the cardboard as the image shows.

In front of every number, draw some vegetables, as shown in the image. Please, consider that the number of vegetables must be different from the number written in front of it.

You can carry out this thanksgiving numbers and quantity lesson activity with younger children, taking into account children’s skills. It is important to write the numbers vertically. You can also change vegetables and use something else they like.

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN OLDER THAN 6

A way to increase the difficulty level of this numbers and quantity lesson activity is by writing mathematical operations instead of numbers. For example, 2 + 2 = 4, children should relate this mathematical operation with four vegetables.
