Nowadays, being parents is a much more complex task than a few years ago. That is because the world is becoming tougher, and needs are changing and increasing.

We live in a world where we want everything right now. However, children’s development and learning processes don’t happen overnight. Those are processes that require time, work, perseverance, patience, and, in some cases, they cause pain.

When a baby is born, he/she has certain involuntary movements that are known as reflexes. These reflexes begin to disappear in the first-month of children’s life to allow conscious and voluntary movements to come up.

These movements are part of the children’s motor development. As I mentioned earlier, it is a process. Children have different times to develop their skills; it is also important to keep in mind that we can help children develop and get their skills through stimulation.

Stimulation will allow boys and girls to get body movement skills and promote cognitive, linguistic, and social skills; remember that motor skills are divided into two fine motor skills and gross motor skills. Both are equally important for the development of children. Without gross motor skills, we could not develop fine motor skills.

However, today we are going to work on and enhance fine motor skills in boys and girls. When talking about fine motor skills, we talk about the body’s small movements that we carry out with hands, feet, fingers, mouth, and tongue.

Through the Montessori learning method, children develop skills through daily activities. It is an experiential and experimental practice that consequently brings true learning and the improvement of skills.

HOW TO CARRY OUT THIS FINE MOTOR DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITY WITH CHILDREN OF OTHER AGES?

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN UNDER 4 YEARS OLD

You can do this fine motor development activity with younger children. When working with children, it is very important to ensure their well-being and use the appropriate materials. It may be a bit risky to work with beads since they are very small, and children can put them in their mouths, so to do this activity with younger children, we can use pasta as it is a bit larger. Children will have to introduce the yarn through the pasta.

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN OLDER THAN 6

To do this fine motor skill activity with older children, we don’t need to change materials, but we must increase the difficulty level. We can use cards with colors to allow children to place the color beads according to the indications.
