No matter how much the human being may have evolved, an activity lasts through the years, which is art. Our ancestors expressed all kinds of experiences and learning for future generations through art, which was a way of not letting their traditions die—human beings found in art an incredible way to express each of their emotions.
Through art, children get many physical and cognitive skills. However, art has a significant influence on children’s emotional development.
A matter that is not given the importance it requires because, most of the time, parents’ biggest concern is that children learn to read, write, add and subtract, leaving aside emotional development.
By doing this, those parents are not aware that a child who has not adequately developed his/her emotional intelligence will be insecure, will not believe in his/her abilities, and will not develop autonomy and independence.
That will prevent him/her from being willing to learn, not because he/she does not want to but because he/she doesn’t believe in his/her abilities to do so.
When children paint and draw, they are letting their imaginations fly. They strengthen their creativity, reflect on how they perceive the world, and develop their self-esteem, autonomy, confidence, and independence.
They can also express what they feel in a respectful and tolerant way without fear of failing. That allows children to be more motivated to discover new things.
The development of artistic activities also develops useful motor skills to function in the day to day, in an appropriate way. Without a doubt, art should be included in children’s daily lives at an early age. This will allow them to grow up happy, and a happy child will be a happy adult.
The following water art activity is based on Montessori’s learning method. This water art for preschoolers activity seeks to develop children’s autonomy and independence through experiential activities to express themselves freely.
