Writing and reading are two very important skills that boys and girls must learn at an early age. These skills will be the foundation of other learnings they will face at school. Writing and reading allow children to expand their vocabulary and express themselves and communicate in a better way.

Previously, boys and girls had problems starting to read and write. That was because children didn’t have any contact with these activities before starting school when they were about six. Children of six have problems if they are not properly stimulated since they were born.

Literacy processes allow younger children to link concepts and even relate words to objects. That helps them develop thinking, focus on reading and writing, and develop creativity.

At Montessori’s learning method, boys and girls lead their knowledge journey because it recognizes that every child learns in his/her way. This method teaches children to write before reading and according to their interests.

THEME: MONTESSORI LITERACY – READING AND WRITING

HOW DO WE DO THIS ACTIVITY?

Topic: Literacy

Age: 4-6 years old children

Goal: Kids will learn how to link beginning sound objects with letters

Difficulty level: Advanced. Children can do this thanksgiving Montessori literacy activity independently with adult surveillance.

MATERIALS

Paints
Some cardboards
Scissors
A pencil

ACTIVITY DEVELOPMENT

Step 1:

Use cardboard to draw a pumpkin pie at the topside. Write “Pumpkin Pie” below the drawing.

Step 2:

Draw some objects that begins with each letter of “PUMPKIN PIE” and cut them.

HOW TO CARRY OUT THIS MONTESSORI LITERACY ACTIVITY WITH CHILDREN OF OTHER AGES?

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN UNDER 4 YEARS OLD

You can do this thanksgiving Montessori literacy activity with younger children. If they cannot relate objects with letters, you should lower the difficulty level. Children learn through their senses during this age, so they must do this activity with adult surveillance. This way, children will learn to create words with adults’ guidance. Children can use play dough to do the letters and stimulate the touch sense.

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN OLDER THAN 6

This Montessori literacy activity can also be done with older children and increase the difficulty level. For example, they can write the object’s name by linking syllables or use chips with letters to write words.
