From birth to 6, children are in a continuous development process. During this process, they are being prepared to get the skills needed to interact with their environment. The more stimulation children receive, the greater the development of their skills and learning.

Boys and girls love to copy everything they see; this is how they learn skills to function on a day-to-day basis. However, children should not be pushed to make an exact copy of what they see since they will find the best way to do the tasks and develop their skills.

There are many activities children can do to develop fine motor skills. But these activities should be fun. Suppose children see these activities as a game. In that case, that will be much more engaging and eye-catching, and they will be happy to repeat the exercises until they master them.

The next kids motor skills activity is inspired by Montessori’s learning method. Through it, children will play and, at the same time, will learn some movements they will need in their daily life. They will also get some mathematical skills.

HOW DO WE DO THIS ACTIVITY?

Topic: Fine motor skills

Age: 4-6-year-old children

Goal: Kids will stimulate and develop hand and wrist movements.

MATERIALS:

Clothespin
Two plastic containers
Yarn
Black foamie
Scissors
Glue
Black card stock or heavy paper

ACTIVITY DEVELOPMENT

Step 1:

Cut yarn strips. These will be used as worms. Put them into a container.

Step 2:

Make a chicken beak using the card stock and glue it to the clothespin.

Step 3:

Use the chicken beak on the clothespin to catch the worms, then put them one by one into the second plastic container.

HOW TO DEVELOP THIS KIDS MOTOR SKILLS ACTIVITY WITH CHILDREN OF OTHER AGES?

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN UNDER 4 YEARS OLD

We can do this kids motor skills activity with younger children. If they cannot use the hooks to catch the worms, you can modify the preschool activity and make it more fun by painting their fingers as a chicken beak and using them to transfer worms.

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN OLDER THAN 6

We can also do this kids motor skills activity with older children. To make it eye-catching, we should increase the difficulty level. We can use plastic pans with smaller hole. Here children will improve their hand and finger movements.

This video will show you how to do the”YUMMY WORMS” activity step by step. It was designed for 4-6-year-old children. Here, children will transfer yarn worms from one pan to another using a cloth drying hook or clothespin.

This kids activity will develop their fine motor skills, focus, and following instructions. We will use yarn, scissors, a clothespin, two plastic pans, and a black foamie.
