A frequent question we ask ourselves as parents is how we can enhance our toddler’s development. There is a way we can help them improve their growth in each dimension and improve neuro-connections at this age. It is through sensory stimulation.
When we talk about senses, we talk about eyes, nose, mouth, skin, and ears. But why is sensory stimulation so important? Our learning is 100% dependent on the sensations perceived by the world around us. Through senses, we perceive information that will be processed in our brain and transform it into knowledge. The more stimuli children receive, the greater their ability to learn.
Nowadays, movement is considered a sense and is called the sense of movement or vestibular sense. Through this, we coordinate our head and body movements, changing position and involuntary movements that we make when walking, running, riding a bike, etc.
How can we stimulate the senses in children? Let us remember that children will always receive stimuli. When they are born, they start learning from everything they see and feel.
The place where children grow up must be calm and loving, where they feel safe and confident. That will influence how they assimilate information. We help them to identify sounds and improve their vocabulary when we talk with them or when we make them listen to different sounds.
A daily task, such as taking a bath, can enhance their sense of touch. The skin always perceives stimuli.
To improve the sense of sight, we can use materials of different sizes, shapes, and colors.
The sense of taste and smell work together. The more contact children have with different scents, the more likely they are to try new foods at mealtime.
Please remember that sensory stimulation is crucial. Human beings learn from their environment. The more motivation they perceive, the more neuro-connections children will build.
From ages 0 to 6, 80% of the brain’s development occurs, influencing how children will learn in the future.
