Motor skills have a significant impact on children’s learning development. María Montessori said that children strengthen their cognitive abilities by exploring and manipulating objects and developing a strong personality.
María Montessori discovered that the hand and intelligence have a close relationship since it is through the hand that children interact with the environment and acquire new knowledge. That’s why children must receive the appropriate stimuli from their environment, hence the importance of having a prepared environment.
Since they learn concretely and not abstractly, each of the objects and materials that children use can offer them real experiences.
All children have a great capacity to learn, but not all of them learn in the same way and at the same time. The adult must respect the time of each child, promote learning without them feeling pressured.
However, there are some stages in which children should already have acquired specific skills such as: at 12 months of age, children should have the ability to coordinate hand and eye and push objects with the index finger; at three children can already insert cards, build towers, open and close doors; at five children are ready to perfect their writing technique, they have developed strength and ability to use scissors, cut, zip up and down and perform many more activities autonomously.

HOW DO WE DO THIS ACTIVITY?

- Cardboard flowers of different colors, with holes around the edge of the flower (previously made)
- A container with yarn of different colors

ACTIVITY DEVELOPMENT
Step 1:
Take the yarn from the container and trim it with scissors.
Step 2:
Pass the yarn through each of the holes in the flower.

HOW TO DEVELOP THIS FLOWER CRAFT ACTIVITY WITH CHILDREN OF OTHER AGES?
CHANGES FOR CHILDREN YOUNGER THAN 4
This flower craft activity can be done with younger children. To reduce the difficulty level of the exercise, it is necessary to change the materials. In this case, children can use glue or Play-Doh to push into the holes at the flowers’ edges and then decorate the flower with sequins or beads. In this way, a spring activity appropriate to children’s development and abilities will be carried out.
CHANGES FOR CHILDREN OLDER THAN 6
This flower craft activity can be done with older children. The adult will give them the flowers without the holes to increase this activity’s difficulty level and make it more striking for them. Children will make holes around the edges using a hole punch. It is important to make sure that the hole punch works in perfect condition.
