Children learn through their senses and interacting with the world. Their initial learning must be based on real and concrete concepts and then move on to the abstract. When boys and girls master the activities using the Montessori method, it will become easier for them to face new challenges.

We must stop abstractly teaching children math; otherwise, teaching mathematical concepts in this way can have negative consequences on learning. I know we seek the best for our children. We want all their learning processes to be meaningful, and they feel capable and motivated to acquire new knowledge.

That is why I am motivated to develop math activities to help children recognize numbers and quantities based on children’s Montessori pedagogical methods.

HOW TO CARRY OUT THIS ACTIVITY WITH CHILDREN OF OTHER AGES?

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN UNDER 4 YEARS OLD

We can do this thanksgiving turkey math activity with younger children. If they still cannot place the cotton pieces with the spoon, they can do it with a clamp or their hand. This change is made to modify how they use their motor skills and lower the difficulty of mathematical concepts they will learn. If boys and girls still cannot make a number and quantity ratio, they can follow each wing’s color pattern.

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN OLDER THAN 6

This math activity can be done with older boys and girls. If they already made a quantity and number ratio, they can write the corresponding number on each wing according to the number of pieces of cotton they place. In this way, it will increase the level of difficulty of the activity.
