As we well know, a prepared environment favors children’s learning processes. Children learn through the exploration of the environment; this means that the more stimuli they find in the world around them, the greater their learning. So, if we seek to develop creative capacity and art in children, we must prepare their environment for this, as suggested by the Montessori learning method.
To develop art in children, we must put them in contact with art itself. It should not be thought that, by showing them works of art, we will hinder their ability to create; that’s the opposite. Remember that cognitive skills develop like other skills through concrete experiences, those we see, feel, hear, etc.
Artistic activities help children strengthen their emotional dimension since they can know the environment and themselves. It is a non-verbal way of expressing their feelings and supporting their self-esteem. The cognitive skills that are developed are classification, order, quantity, spatial relationship, among others. Art also helps children develop language when they feel the need to talk about their creation. Finally, with artistic activities, children develop physical skills and strengthen and develop fine motor skills, which refers to the body’s small muscles’ precise movements. It also supports hand-eye coordination and lateralization.
Without a doubt, promoting art in children brings innumerable benefits to their lives and much more. If this experience is shared with loved ones, it can become additionally enriching.
