The hand allows children to discover and connect with their environment. Through exploration, children find a new world full of infinite learnings. This is why María Montessori said, “the hands are the instrument of man’s intelligence.” So, we can infer it is essential to develop fine motor skills at an early age.

By developing fine motor skills, children control their environment and develop the skills required to perform daily living activities, such as dressing, combing their hair, eating, writing, etc. At the same time, they are strengthening their autonomy and self-confidence. This is essential for children to take on new challenges and feel safe and motivated to realize their achievements.

In the same way, fine motor skills fulfill vital functions for people, not only for the development and strengthening of intelligence but also in the body’s functioning. Although the hand is of utmost importance for people’s development when talking about fine motor skills, it is not only about them.We also refer to the precise movements made with the smallest body muscles such as hands, fingers, eyes, feet, mouth, and tongue.

The deterioration of muscles and brain problems have a significant impact on the loss of fine motor skills. People with diseases such as Parkinson’s have great difficulty speaking, eating, and writing, as they have lost control of their small muscles’ movements.

By giving children the option to explore their environment autonomously, as suggested by the Montessori learning method, they develop different neural connections. This will allow the acquisition of new knowledge and favor the health of their brain. The more the brain exercises, the stronger it will be. It happens exactly the same by not stimulating it; a faster deterioration will occur.

HOW TO DEVELOP THIS LEAF CRAFTS ACTIVITY WITH CHILDREN OF OTHER AGES?

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN YOUNGER THAN 4

This leaf crafts activity can be done with younger children. To reduce the difficulty level, you will not need to change the materials. However, they may not yet have developed the ability to open the holes in the leaves on their own at this stage. Meaning, in this case, the adult can give them the leaves with the holes already open. In this way, a DIY activity appropriate to children’s development and abilities will be carried out.

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN OLDER THAN 6

This leaf crafts activity can be done with older children. To increase the difficulty level, children can use colored beads to insert with the foamy leaves. Although the children are older, they should not put the beads in their mouths. Therefore, an adult’s accompaniment is essential. In this way, a motor skill activity appropriate to children’s development and abilities will be carried out.
