For children to retain information and get new knowledge, the development and stimulation of memory are essential. In the first years, memory is not very conscious; however, children keep in their minds those experiences that marked their lives in some way.
Memory allows information to be stored in our brain, and then, when necessary, this information can be recovered and used. Memory is needed to develop complex skills such as reading and writing. As children develop their skills through the years, memory is developed and evolves.
A newborn baby’s memory up to six months is primitive and works short-term. They can recognize sounds, words, and routines, but little by little, it develops. Children from 1-2 years old memory start remembering language. After three, their memory is more aware of things happening around them and can save memories.
Memory’s development helps children increase their intelligence and build human identity through every life experience. That means that the way to strengthen children’s memory and learning processes is by having meaningful experiences that positively influence their lives.
Hence, the importance of children having the possibility of exploring their world, where manipulating materials and objects plays a fundamental role in acquiring new knowledge. María Montessori recognized the importance of children learning through their own experience and designing environments with specific materials to develop their abilities according to their interests.
