Every child is born with many abilities and incredible potential that must be developed to the maximum. However, this does not mean they are born with the same skills, learn in the same way, or at the same pace. Thus, each child is a world, and although each one can develop many skills, they will always have more affinity with some things.

Active learning is an excellent strategy to develop different children’s skills in all their areas of development. When they do experiments, they learn a specific science, and they understand the world around them in a concrete way.

When children achieve the expected results, they strengthen their self-esteem and confidence. That will allow them to participate actively, express their opinion, solve problems, and be autonomous and independent.

One objective of experimentation with children is to provide them with comprehensive training to develop critical, reflective, and analytical thinking. When investigating, children are linked to respect for each learning process, providing them with various alternatives without imposing anything. Children must be the leaders of their learning, as proposed by the Montessori learning method.

The best way for children to learn is from their own experience, not through others’ experiences, just like in this balloon science experiment activity. No matter how many times they have to try to do it well, everything is part of a process and learning where they need an adult’s guidance. The child is the leader of his/her process.

Christmas Craft for Kids

Age: 4-6-year-old children

Difficulty level: Advanced. Children must do this balloon science experiment activity autonomously while experimenting.

MATERIALS

A plastic bowl
A balloon (previously decorated with a reindeer face/ears)
The top half of a plastic bottle
Warm or hot water (adult help)

ACTIVITY DEVELOPMENT

Step 1:

Put the balloon on the top of the bottle.

Step 2:

Pour the warm water into the plastic bowl (children must do this with an adult’s help).

Step 3:

Put the bottle with the balloon into the warm water and see what happens.

This balloon science experiment activity can be carried out with younger children. As it is a scientific experiment, the materials for its preparation cannot be changed. However, it is very important that, when pouring the hot water into the bowl, it is done by an adult to avoid an accident and carry out a suitable activity for children.

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN OLDER THAN 6

This balloon science experiment activity can be carried out with older children. To increase the difficulty level, you can also use a bowl with cold water and observe and analyze what happens to the balloon when the bottle is introduced into each bowl. Children will be able to inquire about the result of their experimentation.
