Human beings learn by exploring their surrounding with their senses. When boys and girls can interact with their environment, they develop an endless amount of useful life skills such as physical, emotional, social, and cognitive skills. At this age, sensory stimulation is vital to develop such skills.

The sensory stimulation objective is to develop and enhance skills through stimulation perceived with the senses processed by the brain and assimilated as new knowledge. At this age, children develop two important cognitive skills of memory and attention. With these two, children will open the door to more complex abilities such as problem resolution, language, and creativity.

Doing sensory activities with children will bring benefits to them. While exploring, children understand the world around them. Let us remember that children in their first years of life are completely attracted to exploring and understanding the world around them. Maria Montessori calls these instincts “sensory periods.”

In the sensory periods, children carry out activities that allow them to have experiences needed to develop their lives. It is very important to consider that the activities must be carried out during a sensory period to promote children’s learning. Of course, this doesn’t mean carrying out the learning process outside the sensory period will prevent them from learning. Learning will occur, but it will be a bit difficult process.

HOW DO WE DO THIS ACTIVITY?

Colorful Crafts for Toddlers

Age: 1-2 years old

Goal: Stimulate children’s sense of sight with a sensory bottle craft.

Difficulty level: Basic. This sensory bottle craft activity is designed to be done autonomously by exploring with an adult’s surveillance and guidance.

MATERIALS

Water
Hydrogel beads
Bright confetti with stars shape
A plastic bottle
Glycerin or vegetable glycerin

ACTIVITY DEVELOPMENT

Step 1:

Pour the water into the plastic bottle. (All activity with adult help and supervision)

Add the glycerin into the plastic bottle.

Step 3:

Put the hydrogel beads into the plastic bottle.

Step 4:

Put the confetti into the plastic bottle.

HOW TO CARRY OUT THIS SENSORY BOTTLE CRAFT ACTIVITY WITH CHILDREN OF OTHER AGES?

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN UNDER 1-YEAR-OLD

This preschool activity can be carried out with younger children without changing the materials as it is a sensory activity. If the bottle is too large for children to handle, use a smaller bottle to promote a better experiment.

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN OLDER THAN 2

You can develop this bottle craft activity with older children using the same materials. To make it more attractive to them, you can use a Ziplock bag. That way, children will stimulate their sense of touch.
