1 in every 10 women experiences postnatal depression or postpartum depression after having a baby and may develop symptoms suddenly or gradually within the first year after giving birth. This type of depression is a common problem and should be addressed immediately with treatment and proper help. I also want to share with you some tips on how to deal with postnatal depression.
Tips on How to Deal with Postnatal Depression
1. Have yourself a few 5-minute breaks
The baby is no doubt very demanding, but rudimentary needs are, too! You are allowed to have a 5-minute break to finish your morning coffee or to go to the bathroom. Even if the baby starts to cry, you can leave it be for a few minutes to finish whatever you are doing. The little one will be fine, and you will not be angry with yourself and the baby for being interrupted. This will help a great deal when you deal with postnatal depression. Believe me, if things keep going like this, the consequences will reflect on a child as well.
2. Organize your space
Many things are dangerous for a baby; therefore, it must always be under your watchful eye. Instead of carrying all toys from one room to another, make some space for them in each room. It will be a small safe space for a kid to play. In such a way, you will be able to watch a baby while cooking, drinking coffee, or talking on the phone.
3. Dedicate at least half an hour a day to your hobby or self-development
The Internet is the source of inspiration and ideas. There are loads of information, online courses, and webinars that might catch your attention. To deal with postnatal depression, make some time for yourself, for example, when the baby is asleep.
4. Do your house chores together with the baby
Obviously, a two-year-old child cannot help you clean the house. However, you should show encouragement and approval of its wish to help. Even though the help is minimal, it will keep a child busy and let you do your work. Furthermore, after such activities, a little one will be sleeping like a log, and you will have some time for yourself.
By doing your chores together, you get to deal with postnatal depression and a child gets to know what “partnership” is. For instance, a two-year-old baby can be eager to get clothes out of the drier or wash its plastic dishes. Such behavior contributes to a good cause. Do not think that they are too small to help you. Quite on the contrary, kids like helping their parents, doing things together, because that is how they feel important and significant in the eyes of adults.
Do not be afraid that a kid can ruin something or get hurt. Just look after a child and subtly take all the dangerous things away. The gratitude and love it gets from you will help your child be more confident, eager to learn, and become more independent in the future. How is it a bad thing?
5. Change of scenery for the weekend!
Occasionally changing the scenery is a good way to deal with postnatal depression. It does not mean that you have to do something extraordinary for the weekend, not at all. By having the idea that you will need more free time for the weekend, you will be able to finish everything you have planned during the working days. This approach will free your weekend, and you will be able to spend time with your family or have some quality time for yourself.
