There are a lot of really lovely homemade toys for baby that you can make for your little one. Obviously they come in a variety of difficulties in terms of how much work or skill you will need, but there are plenty of things you can try.

Here are just a few ideas for homemade toys for baby.

Simple things

The easiest toy of all is a wooden spoon with a face colored on it. It doesn’t need dangerous hairs or bows but will be perfect for teething, and is very safe and fun. Add a tin to it and you will have made your own musical instrument too and every little child delights in making a bit of noise!

For another noisy toy you can fill a cardboard tube with some dry rice or pasta, then glue both ends down. If you have a few tubes, you can put in differing amounts of rice and pasta to make different sounds inside. If you don’t have tubes try plastic bottles.

With another tube you can cut a hole in the lid (but don’t stick it down this time) and find some extra bottle tops, writing 1,2,3,4,5 on each. Baby can post these circles through the tube lid again and again.

Another toy with bottle tops is to put a hole in the center of each one. Tie them on to a length of ribbon and knot it at both ends. You can add a jingly bell for extra fun.

More Tricky Things

A taggie blanket makes a gorgeous toy, it’s just different colors and types of ribbons sewn in loops around a square of cloth. It’s not too difficult, but ensure the ribbons are very secure. You can also sew, crochet or knit lovely little toys and you will find unlimited free patterns for these on the internet.

You can do dollies, teddies or even dinosaurs and aliens! Taking two pieces of fabric with some dried peas or rice in the middle, you can make your baby a bean bag.

A few pieces of felt can make animal hand or finger puppet too. Why not link them to a story or rhyme.

Whatever you want to make, give it a try. You never know what you can do!
