Feeding the Bird Spring Activities for Preschoolers Montessori Worksheets (4-6 Year Olds)

María Montessori discovered that children, at an early age, have a great impulse to perform different activities that involve their bodies. This is a way to discover their own body and understand how it works. This interest is most latent between the ages of 2 and 4, a period in which children develop their gross and fine motor skills.

When talking about motor skills, we speak about coordinated movements that the person performs. Gross motor skills involve the usage of arms and legs. They need strength and coordination as jumping, running, bouncing a ball, among others. Fine motor skills are coordinated and precise movements used in daily activities like writing, cutting, threading, kneading, or buttoning. The body’s smallest muscles as hands and fingers must work to carry out these movements.

At this phase of children’s development, there is great interest in carrying out activities that adults also do, such as housework. This is where the “I can do it alone” appears. Ideally, at this point, children can participate and perform these tasks freely. That’s why Montessori designed practical life activities based on real-life but adapted to children’s abilities, such as sweeping, pouring water into containers, transporting with a spoon, using tweezers, etc. For learning processes, the child must participate actively and in a safe place.

The stimulation of children’s fine and gross motor skills will allow them to function with greater confidence in different environments, actively participate in various activities, strengthen social skills, and develop their self-esteem and independence to the maximum.

HOW DO WE DO THIS SPRING ACTIVITY FO PRESCHOOLERS WITH CHILDREN OF DIFFERENT AGES?

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN UNDER 4 YEARS OLD

This spring activity for preschoolers can be developed with younger children. To lower the difficulty level, you can change the yarn and use pipe cleaners instead. Those are bigger and will ease the tweezers’ use. If it continues to be hard for children to do the exercise, they can use their fingers to strengthen their pincer grasp. This way, they will carry out an activity according to their development and skills.

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN OLDER THAN 6

This spring activity for preschoolers can be done with older children. To increase the difficulty level and make this activity more attractive for children, they can transfer the worms using a spoon. They will develop their movements’ accuracy and exercise according to their development and skills.
