The Breastfeeding Protocol: A Guide on How to be Ready

It is best to be always ready when it comes to your newborn. Breastfeeding is something you need to be aware of and ready for because the biggest part of your motherly duties starts right after your delivery.

Make sure you carry this personalized checklist to show your healthcare team so that they can skillfully help you through the process.

PS: Please do not forget to keep a copy of this worksheet in your hospital bag when you go for labor.

Feeding Plan For My Little Champ

My name is ___________, and this is to notify you that I choose to strictly breastfeed my baby.

I hope you support my decision and guide me through this process unless it is medically unwise to do so in any situation.

If, in any case, I am unable to reply to your concerns or questions, please contact my doctor ________ or my partner _______ who shall be around me to support me through labor and delivery.

Thank you for your support.

I Prefer Skin to Skin Right After Birth

I would like to have skin to skin contact with my delivery right after birth at least for an hour, unless it is medically unfit for the situation.  In any case I am unable to take up my baby on my chest, please let my partner place them skin to skin. You may carry on with any required medical routines or testing while my child is in a skin-to-skin position itself.

Assistance in Breastfeeding

If there is a staff on board who is a qualified lactation consultant, I would like them to guide and assist me to correctly perform breastfeeding.

Breastfeed Within the First Hour

I would like to initiate breastfeeding in the first hour after birth itself, therefore, please assist me with the same. It would be great if you offered to help whenever you see signs of hunger in my newborn child.

Help with Milk Expression

In any case my baby is separated from me for a long time and the baby needs to feed, please help me initiate hand expressions to feed the baby. It would also be great if you could give me access to a breast pump.

Room with my Baby

Unless any medical concerns call for it, I do not want to be separated from my baby. I would like to be with my baby in the same room for 24 hours so that I can understand their hunger cues and body language. If at all the baby is not with me, please make sure you bring them back to me when you can see they are hungry at the earliest.

Breastfeeding Support at Discharge

In case I need assistance or support after the baby, and I reach back home, I would like to have the contact details of the breastfeeding support of your hospital or any other trusted organization.
