Most of the time, when see children doing things by themselves, we try to help them and make things easy to avoid a mess, save time, minimize mistakes; we can find lots of excuses.

But why is it so important children do these tasks by themselves? Autonomy is the ability to do different activities by ourselves, and that is why we have to allow them to develop their skills.

From an early age, children are looking for an opportunity to do things by themselves. That will develop kids autonomy, problem solution, self-esteem, and manage their emotions because they see they can finish activities without any help.

Montessori’s method enforces the importance that children develop their autonomy by doing daily life activities. Our job is to provide as enough tools as possible to help them with this process.

THEME: KIDS AUTONOMY AND FINE MOTOR SKILLS

ACTIVITY DEVELOPMENT

Topic: Fine motor skills

Age: 4-6 years old children

Goal: Enforce autonomy and, at the same time, develop children’s fine motor skills.

Difficulty level: Basic. This kids autonomy thanksgiving activity was designed to be done autonomously by following instructions.

MATERIALS

A cardboard
Paints
Yellow foamy
A plastic cup
Scissors

THEME: KIDS AUTONOMY AND FINE MOTOR SKILLS

ACTIVITY DEVELOPMENT

Step 1:

Draw a corn shape. Inside of it, draw some circles

Step 2:

Use the paints to paint the corn shape, but not the circles.

Step 3:

Draw some circles in the yellow foamy and cut them. Put them into the plastic cup.

Step 4:

Finally, use the tweezers to take each circle made with foamy and place them over the white circles.

ACTIVITY RESULT

A corn shape with foamy kernels to practice kids autonomy.

HOW TO CARRY OUT THIS KIDS AUTONOMY ACTIVITY WITH CHILDREN OF OTHER AGES?

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN UNDER 4 YEARS OLD

This kids autonomy activity can be done with younger children. To lower the difficulty level, children can do it with cotton and place them using their fingers.

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN OLDER THAN 6

This kids autonomy activity can also be done with older children. To increase the difficulty level, children can follow a pattern while doing this thanksgiving activity. For example, each foamy circle can have a number on it, place them according to the number into the cob circle’s number, or mark them with different colors.

You will see an explanation of the kids autonomy activity “THANKSGIVING CORN KERNELS.” This activity was designed for 4-6 years old children.
