Parents often worry when their child has turned five years old and continues to wet the bed. That can be related to different causes such as: drinking a lot of fluids before sleeping at night, boys produce more urine than girls, pressure in the bladder due to constipation, or emotional problems.

The first thing to keep in mind is that children do not do it on purpose and are embarrassed by this, so avoid punishment. This is more common than imagined. Therefore, don’t make the child feel like they are naughty with this happens. On the contrary, make him/her feel supported and that everything will be fine.

There are different treatments to help children stop wetting the bed. You must take the following steps to help your child stop wetting the bed. However, this may be a psychological issue that a specialist should investigate and deal with.

Do not compare your child, do not use him/her as an example, do not tease him/her, or allow other family members to do it. The child’s self-esteem will be seriously affected if you do so.

Please, do not give the child liquids before going to bed, create habits of going to the bathroom before going to sleep, congratulate him/her every time he/she wakes up dry. On the days the child wakes up wet, ask them to help you change their clothes or to change clothes by themselves.

Again, it is important the child does not feel like they are being punished. You’ll see that little by little, the child will stop doing it.

If, on the other hand, you observe that time passes and the child does not stop wetting the bed, it may be necessary to visit a specialist; this can be a physical or emotional problem. Many parents do not care that their children wet the bed, and when they reach adolescence and adulthood, they continue to do so. The faster you help your child, the better since it is easier to correct it in childhood.
