Fine motor skills are essential for boys and girls to exercise muscles, bones, and nerves to allow their small movements to be precise. From an early age, they detect and strengthen their dominant hand to coordinate their daily routines. In this way, they properly stimulate themselves to develop their main activities such as their strokes and coloring, not to express their emotions.

The development of fine motor skills favors independence, giving them freedom and self-discipline. That allows children to find activities as exploration and learning processes that involve voluntary and precise control of their hand and finger movements.

When children perform activities such as grabbing a spoon to feed themselves, eating a banana, washing their hair while bathing, putting on socks, or reaching for a toy in the crib and swinging it, they develop precision skills they will later need. Dressing and undressing and collaborating with home activities give children a skill set to succeed in their literacy process.

A game is their best ally since they have the possibility of continuity and freedom of movement, either in a group or individually, acquiring their rhythm and style. All this recognizes the evolutionary needs and characteristics of each age. Thus, the child adapts and gives meaning to the world around him/her.

Next, I describe an eye hand coordination activity for kids to do at home and express their emotions, concentration, and abilities:

HOW DO WE DO THIS EYE HAND COORDINATION ACTIVITY WITH CHILDREN OF DIFFERENT AGES?

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN UNDER 4 YEARS OLD

This eye hand coordination activity can be done with younger children. If children have not yet developed the ability to open the clothespins and hang the clothes on the rope, they can separate and classify objects as indicated by the adult. They can sort the clothes by color in different containers or by function, clothes for hot or cold weather. In this way, a preschool activity can be carried out according to children’s development and skills.

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN OLDER THAN 6

This eye hand coordination activity can be done with older children. To increase the difficulty level, the clothespins that will be used in the activity must be smaller. Remember that children must develop coordination and greater precision in their hand movements to manipulate objects appropriately. In this way, the motor skill activity will be carried out according to the development and abilities of children.
