The brain has an incredible capacity for assimilation, especially when we talk about children’s brains and their learning processes. During the first years of life, the brain is in the development process. That’s why we must carry out sensory activities. These exercises’ objective is to activate the children’s senses: taste, touch, hearing, sight, and smell.
“No one can be free unless he/she is independent; the first active manifestations of individual freedom in a child must be guided in such a way that, through this activity, the child can be in conditions to reach independence” Maria Montessori.
This means that children learn in a better way when they are autonomous in their learning processes. It is not the same to know the theory about something as having a perception of things based on their own experience.
In the first years of life, the brain has a special quality known as brain plasticity. This is the ability to assimilate information in an easier way generating new neural connections. The brain is in the capacity to perceive all the stimuli, and the more stimuli it perceives, the greater the plasticity. Consequently, the greater the intelligence. The stimulation of the senses clearly represents an important part of intellectual development.
In Montessori’s learning method, the child is recognized as a human being endowed with skills, capable of developing their learning autonomously and independently without constant adult supervision. It is necessary to create sensory environments in which children can stimulate their senses, such as textured activities, outdoors, cooking, music, etc.
