Children are born with a great capacity to learn new things very quickly. However, although this occurs naturally in them due to the brain development in children, it is essential not to neglect mathematical processes.

Mathematics holds a fundamental place in people’s lives; even children, in an unconscious way, include them in most of the activities they carry out in their daily lives.

However, children must have the ability to understand and know the world around them, and this implies that more conscious mathematical processes take place.

It is here where stimulation plays a fundamental role in developing mathematical, logical thinking in children.

Children are indeed born with different abilities, and over time, they strengthen them. However, getting mathematical concepts requires a stimulation that favors learning.

This stimulation must be planned that they can learn through experimentation concretely and naturally. That requires that the activities carried out fill specific characteristics that catch children’s attention to identify and perceive each of their qualities using their senses.

Children should not feel forced to do the activities. You should understand that each child develops his/her abilities at different times.

To get started, you can involve mathematical concepts in activities that are completed daily, such as going to the supermarket, cooking, sorting waste, organizing toys, setting the table, organizing clothes by colors, and so.

MATERIALS

A container
Tweezers
Six cardboard tubes (like those used in the toilet paper), each labeled
Images of different wastes to match the labels (metal, plastic, glass, paper, etc.)
A tray

ACTIVITY DEVELOPMENT

Step 1:

Take the tweezer from the container.

Step 2:

Use the tweezer to pick up the drawings of different waste items that are on the tray.

Step 3:

Place the waste images within the cardboard tubes as appropriate.

HOW TO DEVELOP THIS EARTH DAY PRESCHOOL ACTIVITY WITH CHILDREN OF OTHER AGES?

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN UNDER 4 YEARS OLD

This Earth Day preschool activity can be done with younger children. To reduce the difficulty level, children can do an activity with materials and not with drawings.

In this way, children will have the possibility of doing the exercise more authentically. They will be able to identify each one of the materials.

It is important to remember that children’s mind, at an early age, is not prepared to understand abstract concepts. In this way, children will carry out a math activity appropriate to their development and abilities.

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN OVER 6 YEARS OLD

This Earth Day preschool activity can be carried out with older children. To increase the difficulty level, children will have to arrange the waste in their respective bins.

After completing the classification, they must count how many elements each recipient has and write the corresponding number on a paper.

To perform the Earth Day preschool activity, children must already relate quantity to a number. In this way, children will carry out a preschooler activity appropriate to their development and abilities.
