It’s important to expose toddlers to different textures and you can do it in a fun way by giving them sense of touch activities. Read the step-by-step instructions below for our sensory hand Montessori-based activity for toddlers.
Maria Montessori compares a child’s brain before the age of six with a sponge. The reason to make this comparison is that children at this stage have a natural predisposition to learn new things.
Children learn everything they see, hear, smell, feel, and taste; therefore, it is imperative to carry out adequate sensory stimulation.
The objective of carrying out sensory stimulation activities with children is to develop and awaken the senses since information enters the brain through the senses.
There is where the entire process of assimilation and processing new information turns into knowledge.
That means that learning will always be linked to the senses. Sensory development occurs even before children are born.
In the womb, they are capable of perceiving sounds and tastes. When children are born, they have already made relationships with the stimuli they perceived while in the womb.
Facilitating the interaction of children with smells, sounds, and textures, among other stimuli, allows them to understand and know the world around them while developing an idea of themselves.
Children constantly perceive stimuli from the environment, so it is essential to generate surroundings that feel motivated to explore and investigate.
They find a free self-learning process, as proposed by the Montessori method.
These environments must be orderly, with light, in which children feel comfortable, with different stimuli. These objects produce sound, plants with smells, materials with textures, etc.
