All children have an innate desire to count, separate, classify, and arrange objects according to color, shape, function, or size. All this occurs naturally, and this is part of an incredible world of mathematics. For children, mathematics is of great importance, especially if presented in a simple, real, and concrete way in daily activities.
Children can get this knowledge. However, when we don’t adequately stimulate our children, they can lose the ability to learn or like math. The mathematical processes will be much more complicated for them to grasp.
To enhance mathematics in children, it must be presented concretely in the first years of life and allow children to assimilate all these concepts through their own experience.
Unintentionally, many times children are expected to perform mathematical operations to acquire each of the concepts. If the child is mentally ready to do this, the concepts will be understood.
However, if the child is too young or too old, the effect will be harmful, and the brain will reject this knowledge. Montessori discovered that mathematics and logical thinking in children could be developed very early. The patterns, routines, organization, shapes, and colors are part of a process and help build thought.
