Do you want kids to love science? Then, surprise them with fun and exciting cool science experiments. Check out the step-by-step instructions for the “invisible bird” STEM activity.
Through experimentation, children manage to develop an idea of themselves and their environment. The best way to achieve authentic learning is when they have the opportunity to practice and do it by themselves. For this reason, conducting experiments with children leaves them with a lasting impression and aids in their intellectual development.
The Montessori learning method promotes teaching through active learning. Children have a great learning capacity; however, it is not easy for them to understand abstract concepts since their thoughts are concrete (here and now). So, the best way for children to learn is when these concepts are tangible, that means, when children can see, feel, smell, hear, etc., in a real and concrete way, as their mind works.
Conducting scientific experiments with children is not intended to prepare them to be future scientists but rather to develop their ability to think, reason, investigate, reflect, and analyze. In short, they develop logical thinking to understand those things that happen around them.
Active learning also supports children’s social skills. Regardless of whether the activity is carried out at home or school, children learn to respect others’ points of view, establish teamwork, listen and give their opinion respectfully. They can achieve these when experimenting. According to the above, it can be concluded that experimentation at an early age is essential to promote children’s learning processes.
THEME: COOL SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS FOR KIDS
HOW DO WE DO THIS ACTIVITY?
Topic: Experiments
Age: 4-6-year-old children
Goal: Through this cool science experiments activity, children will develop their exploration and experimentation capacity by elaborating a scientific experiment.
Difficulty level: Advanced. This cool science experiments activity is designed for children to carry out autonomously and independently by following instructions and being accompanied by an adult.
Skills:
- Autonomy
- Following instructions
- Observation
- Accuracy in hand and finger movements
- Self-reliance
- Critical thinking
- Self-esteem
MATERIALS:
- One marker ink supply from a marker you will no longer use. This must be washed before doing the activity to avoid ink spill
- An old marker
- Lemon juice
- White cardboard or piece of paper
- A lighter
- A candle
- One container
- One tray
ACTIVITY DEVELOPMENT
Step 1:
An adult must accompany and help children to safely carry out the activity since they will use fire and children could get burned.
Pour the lemon juice over the marker ink supply until it is full.
Step 2:
Put the ink supply again into the marker.
Step 3:
Draw a bird with the marker on the cardboard or white sheet. You will not see the drawing since the ink supply has no ink but lemon juice.
Step 4:
To prevent children from burning themselves, an adult must do this step since the candle must be lit and passed across the drawing’s back. They only have to observe what happens with the drawing.

HOW TO DEVELOP THIS COOL SCIENCE EXPERIMENT ACTIVITY WITH CHILDREN OF OTHER AGES?
CHANGES FOR CHILDREN YOUNGER THAN 4
This cool science experiment activity can be done with younger children. To reduce the difficulty level, children can freely draw a picture. If they have not yet developed the ability to pour the lemon juice into the ink supply, they can immerse until it is full. For the candle step, an adult must be with children and do it for them to avoid any accident. In this way, an easy science experiment appropriate to children’s development and abilities will be carried out.
CHANGES FOR CHILDREN OLDER THAN 6
This cool science experiment activity can be done with older children. To increase the difficulty level and make it more attractive for children, you can use a hair straightener to replace the candle.
An adult must supervise children at this time to prevent children from getting burned. The adult should be sure that children take the hair straightener from one end away from the heat. The adult must connect the hair straightener to the socket and must supervise the entire process.
If the activity is too complicated for children, the adult can do it. In this way, an activity appropriate to children’s development and abilities will be carried out.

VIDEO DESCRIPTION – COOL SCIENCE EXPERIMENT: MAKE THE BIRD SHOW UP
In this cool science experiment video, you will find the step-by-step of the activity “MAKE THE BIRD SHOW UP,” designed for 4-6-year-old children. They will do a magic ink experiment drawing the bird on white paper and then expose it to high temperatures. Because it is an experiment that requires high temperatures, the accompaniment and help of an adult is essential.
This cool science experiment activity will allow children to develop autonomy, following instructions, observation, precision in hand movements and fingers, self-reliance, critical thinking, and self-esteem. The materials they will need to develop the activity are an old marker ink supply, an old marker, lemon juice, white cardboard, or a white piece of paper, a lighter, and a candle, a container a tray.
