One of the best ways to develop and strengthen children’s skills is to fit pieces together like puzzles. Activities we carry out with children must consider their skills. It is not wise to push them to do something they can’t or won’t do.

Putting pieces together helps children enhance their motor and cognitive skills. They are developing their intelligence, ability to solve problems, and concentration. These indoor activities for kids will also improve their patience and movement skills to place the parts where they belong, trying as many times as needed.

During this indoor game, boys and girls may experience several emotions. It’s best if an adult guides them and helps them understand why they are experiencing feelings, such as impatience and frustration. These emotions are very normal and should not be discounted.

To carry out this indoor activity for toddlers, you should take the children’s stages of development into account. The more pieces it has, the greater the difficulty. A one-year-old child will need bigger puzzle pieces. To stimulate their senses, we can use materials with various textures.

HOW DO WE DO THIS ACTIVITY?

Topic: Fitting pieces together

Age: 1-2-year-old children

Goal: Develop children’s skills to put pieces together, strengthening their eye-hand coordination.

Difficulty level: Advanced. This indoor activity for toddlers is designed so the child can work autonomously with an adult’s surveillance.

MATERIALS

Wooden sticks
A piece of cardboard
A pencil
Paints
A ruler
A cutter, like an Exacto knife, and scissors
You can also print a ginger house image

ACTIVITY DEVELOPMENT

Step 1:

Draw and paint a ginger house on the cardboard (adults can do this part, you also can use the printed image)

Step 2:

Trace some shapes over the house that children will use later, i.e., circle, square, oval.

Step 3:

Use the cutter to cut out the shapes (please do this carefully and out of children’s reach).

Step 4:

Glue a wooden stick to each shape (this is to help children use the pieces).

Step 5:

After doing this, children can start playing and fitting the pieces in place.

HOW TO CARRY OUT THIS INDOOR ACTIVITY FOR TODDLERS WITH CHILDREN OF OTHER AGES

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN UNDER 1

Children under one-year-old can do this indoor activity for toddlers using a box with holes in the top of it and bigger pieces to fit them there. These pieces must be big and have dimensions so children can play with them without any danger and according to their abilities.

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN OLDER THAN 2

Older children can also do this indoor activity for toddlers. It is unnecessary to change materials, but you should increase the difficulty level. In this case, you could use more and smaller pieces.
