Fall Craft Ideas for Kids

Understandably, many of us do not know the critical relationship between fine motor skills and children’s literacy process. Motor skills are essential in learning processes; different motor areas are involved in the reading and writing mechanisms.

During the reading and writing processes, our bodies’ organs work together, such as the eyes, ears, hands, and legs. Children must develop laterality in their brains to achieve literacy, but this can only be achieved through good motor skills.

Taking a needle and threading it, children get skills, strength in their hands, and eye-hand coordination. The development of this skill will later allow the kids to take a pencil and write.

The leaf craft activity that we are going to develop is based on the practical life of Montessori methodology. Kids are going to outline an autumn leaf with a shoelace. This is an activity like sewing. But for our children’s safety, we are not going to use a needle.

Please remember there are many ways to work with them on motor skills; you must consider the children’s abilities and arrange the activities according to their abilities.

Fall Leaf Craft for Preschoolers

Age: 4 to 6-year-old

Activity goal: Children will learn how to make holes and sew with a string in an autumn leaf shape. (Fine motor skills)

Difficulty level: Advanced. This leaf craft activity for preschoolers is designed to carry out autonomously and independently. They can perform this activity by imitating an adult who does it first.

MATERIALS NEEDED TO DEVELOP THE LEAF CRAFT ACTIVITY

A tray
An autumn leaf made from orange card stock or construction paper
Shoelace
Hole puncher

DEVELOPMENT OF THE LEAF CRAFT ACTIVITY

Step 1:

Take the autumn leaf and open holes all around the edges of it.

Step 2:

Having the autumn leaf with holes, begin weaving the shoelace through each hole.

MODIFICATIONS FOR THIS FALL LEAF CRAFT

Toddler Fall Leaf Craft

This fall leaf craft activity can also be done with younger children. It is not necessary to change materials.

You can make fewer holes to work this exercise according to the children’s abilities. The holes can also be a little bigger to help boys and girls pass the shoelace through them.
