The first years of a child’s life are fundamental for the development, autonomy, character, and personality of the future adult. For this reason, we must try to provide children with everything useful for their life and development.
Opposite to what many people think, children are born with many abilities. They only need the right stimuli to strengthen them. These stimuli also allow children to acquire other skills they don’t have when born, such as reading and writing.
That is why sensory education plays such an essential role in children’s development. It is through the senses that children perceive information from their environment to understand and adapt to it.
Being aware of sensory stimulation’s importance at an early age, María Montessori included it in her pedagogy and highlighted several sensory stages, which she called sensitive periods. These refer to children’s interest in exploring their environment in a free, self-directed way.
As proposed by the Montessori learning method, the objective of carrying out sensory activities with children is that children can develop all their abilities autonomously and independently through interaction with the environment. Children do not learn through theory; they must practice and understand the world through their own experience, guided by an adult.
The Montessori method proposes to prepare environments in which children can find everything they need to satisfy their needs. This means that, although Montessori pedagogy promotes children’s autonomous development through the interaction and manipulation of materials, it is the adult who makes sure that children perceive the appropriate stimuli.

HOW DO WE DO THIS SENSORY ACTIVITY FOR TODDLERS WITH CHILDREN OF DIFFERENT AGES?
CHANGES FOR CHILDREN UNDER 4 YEARS OLD
This sensory activity for toddlers can be developed with younger children. To lower the difficulty level of it, you don’t need to change materials. If children have not yet developed their motor skills to arrange the fruit and form a dragon’s shape, the adult can do it for them. The important thing is to give the children the possibility to try each of the fruits and develop their taste buds. This way, an activity will be carried out according to the children’s development and abilities.
CHANGES FOR CHILDREN OLDER THAN 6
This sensory activity for toddlers can be done with older children. To increase the difficulty level and make this activity more attractive, children can prepare the activity using more ingredients. With an adult’s surveillance and ensuring the child’s safety, they can cut the fruits to prepare the activity’s ingredients. This way, an activity will be carried out according to the children’s development and abilities.
