The senses play a crucial role in children’s learning process. Children receive all information through the senses. This information is processed and stored in their minds which is the proper way for children and people to carry out a learning process.
If learning is performed differently, it is not authentic learning; it is merely a memorization process. This information is retained for a while in memory, but probably, at some point, we will forget it. When we don’t understand the information received, it is because it wasn’t absorbed.
Mathematical thinking for children begins during the early years. As was commonly believed a few years ago, children can start to enter the world of mathematics at this age. Mathematical knowledge comes from the child’s actions on the objects that he/she finds when manipulating them. Then the child begins to question how these objects could behave in other circumstances, thus beginning to develop his/her logical reasoning.
When talking about mathematics, we usually relate it with numbers, addition, subtraction, etc. But it really goes beyond as mathematics is in day-to-day life. Children in their daily lives use mathematics unconsciously. When they share their toys with their peers or classify them by function, color, or shape, they also use mathematics. Everyday life is full of mathematical aspects. With mathematics, children will learn from the simple to the complex, from the concrete to the abstract.
Mathematics is abstract, which means that an abstract concept for a child’s mind is difficult to understand. Through the Montessori learning method, children acquire abstract concepts concretely by exploring and manipulating different materials.
