When discussing sensory stimulation, we talk about the information we receive through our senses and nervous system. When children are born, they perceive information from their surrounding environment, and they start learning. That’s why sensory stimulation is important.

Some parents think children without special needs don’t require stimulation. However, all children need to develop their cognitive, motor, and affective processes.

Don’t forget children will naturally receive stimuli from their surroundings, contributing to their development. Imagine all the things children can achieve when doing sensory activities. They will develop not only their senses but their personality, emotional bonds, and intellectual abilities.

A child does not need special materials to stimulate their senses. Remember, they are already being stimulated by what they see, listen to, feel, touch, or taste. It is recommended that when doing these kinds of activities, the child be in a quiet place, so they feel comfortable and safe.

HOW DO WE DO THIS ACTIVITY?

Topic: Sensory stimulation

Age: 2-4 years old

Goal: Stimulate children’s sense of touch, sight, and smell.

Difficulty level: Basic. This Christmas activity was designed to be done autonomously by following an adult’s instructions.

MATERIALS

A bowl of soapy water (It is best to use a tear-proof bubble bath or shampoo, so if the child rubs their eyes, they don’t get soap in them.)
Glittered foam pieces in different colors
Scissors
A pencil
A towel

ACTIVITY DEVELOPMENT

Step 1:

Draw gingerbread cookies on the foam.

Step 2:

Dip the cookies into the soapy water.

Then children can find the objects and remove them from the water with their feet—an excellent way to stimulate them and develop emotional ties.

CHANGES FOR CHILDREN OLDER THAN 4

By increasing the difficulty level, this Christmas activity for toddlers can be done with older children. You can create a puzzle and put the puzzle pieces into the soapy water. Then, children must look for each one and put the pieces together.
