When we talk about mathematics, we immediately think about numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, but mathematics includes much more than that; they are part of everyday life. When children are taught different notions such as up, down, outside, inside, and colors or geometric figures, mathematical thinking is being enhanced.
Between two to six, children begin to develop their first notions from their own body, creating an image of themselves. Please remember that when children are born, they are not aware of their bodies’ existence. Over time they begin to develop the concept of space, which is initially only about what you can see. Even if they know their city or country’s name, they will not be aware of it. Children have a concrete mind at this age, so it is difficult for them to understand abstract concepts such as city, country, or neighborhood.
Children are fully capable of assimilating and understanding ideas such as up, down, left, and right at this age. Skills that will allow them to expand their spatial capacity in the future and allow them to relate to other places. Developing these notions in children is achieved only through their own experience when exploring, as proposed by the Montessori learning method.
For children to adequately develop their spatial abilities, they must first be allowed to crawl, sit on the floor, and stand up. It is a new world for them, depending on the point of view they see it.
Another way to stimulate their learning is through games that incorporate concepts like up, down, in, out, right, and left. All this learning is also part of the incredible world of mathematics through fun math activities for preschoolers. From this, children will develop their logical thinking.
