The only way to have better adults for our society is by educating upstanding children. The development of all children’s abilities is essential; however, it is useless to have an excellent professional if he/she lacks values, which are learned at home and reinforced at school.
Children must carry out different tasks at home to strengthen responsibility, tolerance, equality, gratitude, respect, etc. But that is not all; household activities also facilitate the acquisition of new knowledge, develop motor skills, and enhance autonomy.
Often, trying to avoid suffering for children, they are not allowed to perform certain tasks they already have the skills to do. Therefore, they are prevented from developing as autonomous and self-sufficient people. Additionally, children grow up feeling incapable of taking on significant challenges in their lives. Inadvertently, parents limit and condition their children’s learning.
The opposite happens when children do activities at home. They feel they are equal with other family members, understanding that their work benefits the entire family. That gives them security and confidence to face different challenges and quickly adapt to changes, develop motor skills, and learn to value other people’s work.
Children’s work at home should be appropriate to their development and abilities. It is vital that they are not too advanced, but not too simple either. If they create this habit from a young age, these tasks may be internalized in their adolescence and carried out without any problem.
Avoid making the mistake of dividing household chores by gender. Boys and girls can do the same tasks. Do not say they cannot have home obligations because they are studying. Teach children to organize their time, give them space for themselves, and always teach with love.
