Math benefits, in an impressive way, the development of thought and intelligence of human beings. Math concepts are useful tools for our daily life. We can promote and develop thinking through math since the ability to solve problems logically and coherently is strengthened.
Children with a closer approach to math can solve real problems that arise in their lives promptly, seeking solutions that are not based on emotions but logic.
Math improves communication with others since children can express their thoughts with greater coherence, precision, and clarity. That not only favors relationships with others but also strengthens children’s self-esteem since correctly expressing themselves improves the image they have of themselves.
Although math benefits and aid in developing children’s thinking, it is a headache for many. This lies in the fact that in the first years of life, children are sensory. They learn from everything they can see and feel. That is, they learn in a concrete and not an abstract way.
The Montessori method seeks to develop in children a “Mathematical mind,” meaning that children can analyze, synthesize, and organize until they can achieve the abstraction of concepts through experiential practice.
The best way to teach children complex and abstract processes is by allowing all these concepts to be learned concretely and tangibly by manipulating various materials. This way, they will associate the number with the quantity and perform more complex operations.
